Three Common Malfunctions & Professional Solutions of Full Hydraulic Core Drilling Rigs at African Mining Sites
Jul 23, 2026
Mining sites in Africa face harsh working conditions including high temperature, muddy ground and fractured complex strata, which easily trigger various malfunctions of drilling equipment. With years of experience serving African mining projects, Hubei Xingda summarizes three most common failures of XDX series full hydraulic core drilling rigs, together with standardized maintenance plans and on-site technical service, to avoid unexpected shutdown losses and ensure continuous & efficient deep-hole coring exploration for nickel, gold and other mineral mines.
Causes of the Fault African regions suffer year-round intense solar radiation with no sunshade facilities on construction sites; hydraulic oil is not replaced on schedule and contains excessive impurities; radiators get clogged by tropical weeds, dust and mud; long-duration full-load deep-hole drilling (drilling deeper than 100 meters with HQ drill rods).
Solutions ① Clean radiator fins before daily shift startup, blow away dust and clear attached mud and weeds; arrange construction in staggered time slots at noon to avoid continuous operation under strong sunlight from 11:00 to 15:00. ② Replace original high-temperature resistant special hydraulic oil every 300 working hours in strict accordance with Xingda maintenance standards, and install oil filter elements to filter out impurities. ③ Check for blockages in hydraulic oil return pipelines, adjust the pressure of the rig’s relief valve to the factory standard range to prevent sustained overloaded drilling. ④ Supporting overseas technical services from Xingda: Supply spare radiators and special high-temperature hydraulic oil as extra accessories for African clients, and deliver on-site training on oil temperature monitoring and cooling operations.

Causes of the Fault Coastal mining areas in Mozambique, Tanzania and other countries feature damp, muddy soil that clogs track pads; insufficient hydraulic pressure of the travel motor; improper track tension—excessively loose tracks cause derailment while overly tight tracks increase load; power loss resulting from oil leakage due to aging seals.
Solutions ① Clear silt and weeds from track gaps after each shift to prevent caked dirt from jamming the travelling mechanism. ② Xingda engineers calibrate the pressure of the travel hydraulic system and replace aging oil seals and sealing parts to eliminate internal pressure leakage. ③ Adjust the track tension cylinder according to site soil conditions; moderately tighten tracks on muddy strata; lay steel plates and gravel on soft mud to boost traction. ④ Optimized model advantage: The XDX-5A is equipped with widened and deepened track treads customized for muddy African mining areas, which reduces the probability of slippage faults through hardware design.

Causes of the Fault Nickel-bearing strata in Africa are fractured with abundant fissures, and fallen rock fragments jam core samples inside the inner barrel; mud crust and rust build up on the inner wall of HQ drill rods; worn latches of the overshot lose elasticity; improperly proportioned flushing fluid with insufficient cuttings carrying capacity.
Solutions ① Reduce feed speed when drilling fractured nickel formations and increase the flow rate of flushing fluid to carry rock fragments out of the borehole in a timely manner. ② Inspect the inner wall of HQ drill rods every day to remove mud scale and rust, and replace worn overshot latches regularly. ③ Xingda technical teams formulate customized flushing fluid formulas on site matching local strata to improve borehole wall stabilization and cuttings removal performance. ④ Train local operators to lower the overshot in a standardized manner with controlled force to avoid blockages caused by deviation during lowering; supply a full set of spare inner core barrels and overshot assemblies for long-term mining projects.
