1. What is Wireline Core Drilling?

Wireline core drilling is the most widely used high-efficiency rock coring technology for geological exploration, metal mineral mining, and deep stratum investigation. Different from conventional coring methods that pull out the entire drill string to retrieve rock samples, the wireline system adopts a double-barrel structure consisting of an outer barrel and a retrievable inner barrel assembly.

After completing single-section drilling, operators use a wireline overshot tool to salvage the inner barrel filled with core samples through the inside of the drill rods without lifting the whole drill string. After sample retrieval, the inner barrel is lowered and locked in place to continue drilling. This mature and efficient process has become the standard technology for global nickel, gold, copper and other metal mine exploration, perfectly matching medium and deep hole drilling operations.

2. Working Principle

The outer barrel and diamond bit remain fixed at the bottom of the borehole during continuous drilling. Rock core enters and is locked inside the inner barrel as the drill rotates. Once the inner barrel is fully loaded or coring is completed, the wireline overshot is dropped from the ground to latch the inner barrel. The whole inner core assembly is then lifted to the surface for sample collection. After replacement and resetting, drilling resumes immediately, realizing uninterrupted downhole operation.
