Mineral Exploration in Hilly Africa – XDL-500 Crawler Reverse Circulation Drilling Rig Field Applica

This drilling project is carried out in a tropical hilly mining zone in Africa. The area features undulating terrain, soft muddy laterite soil, alternating hard & soft rock layers and developed fissure water, accompanied by perennial high temperature and harsh working conditions. The primary tasks include mineral prospecting and water well drilling, with a maximum designed drilling depth of 500 meters and variable borehole diameters matched for different drill rods. The drilling rig was required to deliver outstanding off-road capability, stable drilling performance in complex strata and reliable continuous operation under high temperature.
After comprehensive comparison of multiple drilling rig models, the client finally chose the XDL-500 full-hydraulic crawler reverse circulation drilling rig manufactured by Xingda Machinery. After container packing, ocean transportation, on-site assembly and commissioning, the equipment performed continuous geological coring and hydrological drilling steadily. It successfully overcame various geological difficulties in tropical mountainous complex formations and fully accomplished the mining exploration mission.
Adopts heavy-duty hydraulic engineering crawler chassis equipped with 4 hydraulic support outriggers. It delivers powerful traction on steep slopes and soft soil, with a maximum climbing gradient of 21° and travel speed of 2.5km/h for fast relocation. Four outriggers lift and stabilize the whole machine to reduce drilling vibration, avoid hole deviation, and realize accurate leveling even on loose ground, ensuring vertical boreholes.
All control levers, pressure gauges and speed regulators for rotation, feeding and winch are integrated on one unified panel. Operators can adjust rotary speed, feeding rate and lifting force visually. A single worker can complete the whole drilling procedure independently. Intuitive operation reduces fatigue during long-hour work and avoids operational errors leading to drill jamming or hole collapse.
Extended integrated mast with maximum feeding stroke of 3600mm, perfectly suitable for large-angle kick-off drilling. It features strong torsion resistance, simple assembly, easy maintenance and compact transport size. The mast maintains stable vibration damping during deep drilling, effectively preventing borehole wall damage when drilling through alternating hard-soft formations.
Equipped with premium rotary motor with dual torque output (11000/5500 N·m) and adjustable rotary speed (70~140 r/min). Low-speed high-torque mode cuts hard rock efficiently, while high-speed mode accelerates drilling in clay layers. Compact structure offers excellent impact resistance and longer service life in fractured rock formations, thoroughly solving frequent drill sticking problems.
Fitted with world-class high-pressure hydraulic pumps featuring superior pressure resistance and wear resistance. The hydraulic circuit runs smoothly with efficient heat dissipation. Hydraulic oil temperature stays stable under African tropical heat without overheating pressure drop or power loss. With 10T feeding force and max 26T lifting force, the rig can safely pull out drill pipes under hole collapse conditions and lower equipment wear.
Powered by Cummins 132kW diesel engine with ample power reserve, delivering stable output under full-load 500m deep drilling conditions. It owns outstanding fuel economy under high-temperature heavy-duty operation and long service lifespan, ideal for remote mining areas with inconvenient fuel supply overseas.

Since being put into service in the tropical hilly mining area of Africa, the Xingda XDL-500 reverse circulation drilling rig has operated continuously and steadily, completing hundreds of exploration boreholes. The deepest borehole reached the designed limit of 500 meters, with straight boreholes and complete core samples. No long-time shutdown caused by drill jamming or hole collapse occurred throughout the construction period.
The tracked design greatly shortened relocation time between drilling points; the robust power and hydraulic system adapted well to sweltering tropical climate. The overall drilling efficiency increased by over 30% compared with traditional rigs, while construction and maintenance costs decreased significantly. The client received complete geological data on schedule and highly recognized our equipment quality.
Hubei Xingda Machinery devotes itself to R&D and manufacturing of geological drilling rigs, continuously upgrading products to cope with complicated working conditions including plateaus, mountains, tropical hills and water-rich fractured strata worldwide. With reliable product quality and comprehensive global after-sales service, we provide integrated drilling equipment solutions for international mineral exploration, water well drilling and infrastructure geological survey projects.
